The link between Logistics and Transport, and Facilities Management

Here at The Business School we deliver qualifications in both of the above sector areas and are approved by the two key professional bodies – The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT) and The Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM) (formerly BIFM).

This was a deliberate act on our part – to link two key sectors through the delivery of learning.  It may seem an odd pairing, but we believe that they are very closely linked.  And now even more so.

  • Both are growth industries
  • Both are experiencing skills shortages – especially for qualified people
  • Both are technology-based
  • Both require strong communication and interpersonal skills

The qualifications from CILT and IWFM are made up of mandatory and optional units, many of which are common in their subject areas – for example, Project Management, Procurement, Health and Safety, Customer Service, Finance Management, Marketing and Strategy.

Of course, a qualification from CILT will have a focus on Logistics, and IWFM on Facilities and you are not able to gain exemption.  But these do represent transferable knowledge and skills gained which are equally important in both industries.  And learning completed in one will be applicable to the other.

We also assess the different learning in the same way – by assignments.  This is for many reasons.  Learners can submit their assignments at anytime from anywhere – no need to wait for exam dates or venues.  And what this means is that assignments written for one, can be used towards others – reducing writing and research.

So, if you are looking for a career change, or further development, consider undertaking two qualifications – one in Logistics and Transport and one in Facilities Management.  Not only will you show your commitment to your own learning, and enhance your CV, but you will reduce your learning hours.  And both qualifications will look impressive for prospective employers.  Both sectors are global, so opportunities are even broader.
