Facilities Management is a complex and ever growing profession worth billions to the economy. If you work in Facilities Management you’ll already know how large it is. With ever more opportunities opening in this field there has never been a better time to get qualified and take your career and knowledge to the next level.

In the UK alone, there are over 3.4m people employed in FM roles.

With responsibilities ranging from property strategy, space management, building maintenance, administration and provision of administrative equipment, and contract management.  Facilities management is a significant coordinator in an organisation, enabling other aspects of the business to function effectively.  The sector is currently valued at over $27Bn, nearly doubling in size in the next 5 years.  This figure is focussed upon core FM, it does not even consider the other non-core activities which have a significantly greater impact on business.  Figures of up to $250Bn have been quoted as the overall value!  In the UK alone, there are over 3.4m people employed in FM roles.

FM provides the link between the physical environment, the workplace and the occupants.

Overall then we can see that FM takes control of support activities that enable other core parts of an organisation to function effectively.  FM takes a supporting role for the business ensuring the right balance of support is available to the core business activities.  FM provides the link between the physical environment, the workplace and the occupants.  FM works with suppliers, customers, neighbours, contractors and community members to ensure that the workplace is safe, secure and fit for purpose.

Overall, FM provides a key underpinning enabler to enable an organisation to meet its strategic objectives.

FM by default encompasses a considerably wide set of responsibilities within an organisation, principally non-core support activities, enabling the other functions to perform.  This ranges from buildings, IT and equipment, through to energy and welfare including dining facilities.  Overall, FM provides a key underpinning enabler to enable an organisation to meet its strategic objectives.  The paradox is that although FM has been described as non-core support, above; in reality is certainly is core to the overall success of the organisation.

FM is a management function concerning three inter-related elements of business and its working environment, including:

  • Premises
  • Support services
  • Information Technology

For each of these elements, there are two aspects, namely: Management (the ‘thinkers’) and Operation (the ‘doers’).

Facilities Management covers many areas, some of which are becoming ever more important in all businesses, for example, Corporate Social Responsibility. By studying a British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) qualification you can gain an understanding of these areas, add to your current knowledge, and use it within the workplace.
